Belledonne avalanche bulletin (BERA): today’s Météo-France danger level

The Belledonne BERA is the avalanche bulletin published by Météo-France for this massif. The block below shows the current bulletin, with its validity date and a link to the official document; out of season, it says that no bulletin is published.

In short. The Belledonne BERA is published by Météo-France from early November to early June. This page shows the danger level of the current bulletin only when it is read from the official data and still valid, with its dates; otherwise it links to the official bulletin. Savoie Snow produces no bulletin and infers no danger level.

Understanding the conditions

What is the Belledonne BERA?

The avalanche bulletin (BERA, “bulletin d’estimation du risque d’avalanche”, also called BRA) is written by Météo-France for each massif of the Alps, the Pyrenees and Corsica. The Belledonne bulletin gives the danger level, the slopes and altitudes concerned, the state of the snowpack and the expected trend. It has an issue date and a validity date: an expired bulletin no longer describes the current danger.

When is the BERA published?

According to Météo-France and its public archive, bulletins are issued from early November to early June. Outside this period no BERA is published for Belledonne, so there is no official danger level, and Savoie Snow shows none.

The European avalanche danger scale

Adopted by the Alpine countries, the scale has five levels. The definitions below describe snowpack stability in the scale published by Météo-France; the official document also gives the likelihood of triggering for each level.

1 · Low

The snowpack is well bonded on most slopes (Météo-France wording, translated).

2 · Moderate

On some sufficiently steep slopes the snowpack is only moderately bonded; elsewhere it is well bonded.

3 · Considerable

On many sufficiently steep slopes the snowpack is only moderately to weakly bonded.

4 · High

The snowpack is weakly bonded on most sufficiently steep slopes.

5 · Very high

The snowpack is generally unstable.

Read the bulletin before going out

The danger level is not enough: the bulletin specifies the most exposed aspects and altitudes and the type of release possible. Météo-France publishes a guide to reading the BERA. The snow forecast for the massif, on our forecast-by-massif page, is a snowfall total calculated by a model: it is neither a bulletin nor a danger level.
